The Story of Yared

Yared is the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) and Amharic form of Jared, a Hebrew name meaning 'descent' or 'he shall descend.' Beyond the Biblical Jared (one of the long-lived antediluvian patriarchs in Genesis), Yared refers especially to Saint Yared — a 6th-century Ethiopian monk and composer considered the father of Ethiopian sacred music, credited with inventing the system of liturgical chant still used in Ethiopian Orthodox churches today.

Yared is common throughout Ethiopia and Eritrea, given in honor of Saint Yared and as a connection to deep Biblical heritage. Outside East Africa, the name has become more visible through Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora communities in the US, Europe, and Australia.

Saint Yared (c. 505-571 AD) is one of the most important figures in Ethiopian Christianity. He developed 'Zema,' a unique system of liturgical notation and chant still used in Ethiopian Orthodox churches today — one of the world's oldest living musical traditions. He is Ethiopia's greatest sacred musician.
