About NamingEverything
What this is
NamingEverything is a free name research tool. We have 116,550 baby names with meanings, origins, popularity data going back decades, and a playground safety score that flags names kids might twist into something mean.
We also have generators for fantasy characters, company names, sports teams, band names, boat names, and more. But baby names are the core — that's where the data is deepest and the decisions matter most.
How the data works
Name popularity comes from the Social Security Administration — every name given to 5 or more babies in a year, going back to 1880. We cross-reference that with cultural origin data, linguistic analysis, and historical records.
The playground safety score runs each name through phonetic analysis: does it rhyme with common insults? Do the initials spell something embarrassing? Does it sound like something else when said fast? It's not perfect, but it catches things parents miss.
What we charge for
Almost everything is free. The premium tier ($19, one time) gives you detailed playground safety breakdowns, surname harmony scoring, and initials checking. The free version shows the safety rating — premium shows you exactly what the issues are and why.
Privacy
We use Umami for analytics — it's open source and doesn't use cookies or track individuals. We don't sell data. If you create an account, we store your email and saved names. That's it. See our full privacy policy.
