The Story of Oisin
Oisin (also spelled Ossian) comes from the Old Irish word os meaning deer, with the diminutive suffix making it little deer or fawn. In Irish mythology, Oisin is the son of the legendary warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill and the goddess Sive, who was transformed into a deer. He grew up in the wilderness and became the greatest poet of the Fianna.
Oisin has surged in popularity in Ireland, consistently ranking in the top 20 boys names. Outside Ireland, it has gained attention among families seeking Celtic names with deep mythological roots. The difficulty of pronunciation outside Ireland is a known tradeoff.
In Irish mythology, Oisin traveled to Tir na nOg (Land of Youth) with the fairy woman Niamh, where he lived for 300 years. When he returned to Ireland, he instantly aged. His poetry, preserved in the Fenian Cycle, is considered some of the most beautiful in Irish literature.
