The Story of Sabrina

Sabrina is the Latin name for the River Severn — the longest river in Britain — flowing through Wales and England. According to Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century Historia Regum Britanniae, Sabrina was a princess drowned in the river by her jealous stepmother, and the river was forever named in her memory. John Milton dramatized this story in his masque Comus (1634), where Sabrina appears as a water goddess who rescues a kidnapped maiden — one of English literature's earliest feminist heroines.

Sabrina became popular in the US in the 1990s largely through the TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003), starring Melissa Joan Hart. Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020) introduced it powerfully to a new generation, giving the name strong pop-culture momentum.

Sabrina has strong associations with magic and the supernatural through popular culture, but also with sophistication through the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film Sabrina — a romantic comedy that gave the name a timeless, elegant aura long before the witch connection dominated.
