Origin & Etymology

Atreyus is a phonetic elaboration of Atreyu, the young warrior hero of Michael Ende novel The Neverending Story (1979), later immortalized in the 1984 film. Ende constructed the name from the Plains of Atreyu (Grassy Plains) in the Fantastica world, but it has phonetic echoes of the ancient Greek Atreus, father of Agamemnon and Menelaus in Homer Iliad. The -us Latin ending gives Atreyus a more classical, Roman gravitas compared to the original Atreyu, making it feel like a name discovered in an ancient manuscript rather than a fantasy novel.
