“A noble Germanic name with medieval elegance”
Adalind is a compound Old High German name from 'adal' (noble, of noble birth) and 'lind' (serpent, or sometimes 'linden tree'). The 'lind' element in Germanic names was often associated with serpents, which in ancient Germanic mythology were symbols of wisdom and protection rather than evil. The name fell out of use in the Middle Ages but has seen revival in the 21st century.
Adalind gained renewed attention in the 2010s partly due to the character Adalind Schade in the NBC fantasy drama Grimm (2011-2017). Despite the character's villainous nature, the name appealed to parents drawn to its elegant, vintage Germanic sound.
Germanic compound names using 'adal' (noble) were extremely popular in medieval Europe — related names include Adelheid, Adelaide, and Adeline. Adalind represents the ancient Germanic nobility naming tradition.
