The Story of Gaetano

Gaetano derives from the Latin Caietanus, meaning 'from Gaeta' — an ancient coastal city in the Lazio region of southern Italy, one of the oldest settlements on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The name became significant through Saint Gaetano of Thiene (1480-1547), a Neapolitan nobleman who co-founded the Theatines, a Catholic religious order dedicated to clerical reform. Born in Vicenza to a noble family, he devoted his inheritance to the poor and became one of the great reforming saints of the Counter-Reformation.

Gaetano was enormously popular in southern Italy — especially Naples and Sicily — from the 17th through mid-20th century, where it ranked among the top names for generations. It declined sharply after the 1960s as Italian parents turned toward modern names. It persists in Italian-American communities and in Argentina and Brazil, where Italian immigration was heavy.

St. Gaetano of Thiene is the patron saint of the unemployed, gamblers, and good fortune — making him the saint called upon in times of financial hardship. His feast day (August 7) is celebrated with a major festival in Naples. The name Gaetano Donizetti, one of the great bel canto opera composers, gives the name lasting cultural prestige in Italian musical heritage.
