The Story of Freyja
Freyja (also spelled Freya, Freja) is the Old Norse word for 'lady' or 'noblewoman,' from Proto-Germanic *frawjōn. She is the most important goddess in the Norse pantheon — deity of love, beauty, fertility, gold, war, and death. She rides a chariot pulled by two cats, wears the magical necklace Brísingamen, and commands a feathered cloak that allows flight. Half of those who die in battle go to her hall, Fólkvangr.
Freyja/Freya has become one of the fastest-rising names in the English-speaking world, driven by the global popularity of Norse mythology through video games (God of War), TV shows (Vikings, The Last Kingdom), and Marvel's Thor films. In the UK, Freya has been a top-5 girls' name for several years.
Friday is named after Frigg/Freyja in Germanic languages (Old English Frīgedæg). Freyja is one of the most revered deities in modern Ásatrú (Norse paganism revival). In Scandinavia, her name has been used continuously since Viking times.
